Acupuncture produces regional anesthesia by passing long, thin needles through the skin at specific points.  It stimulates these points on the body to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve a desired effect. Acupuncture is typically most successful when used in conjunction with modern therapies for treating certain painful conditions and other medical issues. It has been used on horses for back pain, lameness issues, and neck pain as well as a routine part of training for some of our patient athletes. Treatments usually last 20-30 minutes and routine maintenance treatments maybe required depending on the horse condition.
